Fitting a new sink in your kitchen is a great way to improve the look of the room while also gaining some practical benefits. Granite kitchen sinks are particularly popular choices with many homeowners as they are extremely durable and hard wearing. There are also many different color choices available so you should be able to find granite sinks that matches the current décor of your kitchen, no matter how the room is decorated.
When installing a new sink, you will first need to ensure that the plumbing you currently have in place will be suitable. It may be necessary to extend pipes for water or waste disposal. When you are satisfied with the plumbing, measure the worktop area where the sink is to be installed. A template of the sink’s outline will be available from the manufacturer or retailer to help you do this. Also check the depth of the sink, making sure that there is sufficient room for it inside your kitchen units.
The next stage is to sketch around the outline of the sink template. You should have been given an overlap distance from your supplier, this should be measured around the sink outline and drawn on the worktop. You will only be cutting out the inner template line to make room for the sink.
Place supports under the work surface and proceed to cut around the sink outline using a jigsaw. Now you will need to drill holes in each corner of the granite sink unit itself so it can be secured into the worktop. It will however be necessary to install the taps before the sink is put into position, otherwise you may run into trouble if trying to install them with the sink already in place. When the taps are installed, in order to create a waterproof seal between the sink and the worktop, use putty on the underside of the sink lip. The granite sink can now be lowered into position. Take care not to scratch the worktop during this stage. In order to keep the granite sinks in place you will want to use sink clips on the underside of the lip. Tightening these with screws will ensure they keep the sink firmly in position.
The last step is to secure the taps themselves to the tap fittings that were put in place earlier. When these are in place you can flush the system completely by turning on the water using the shut off valves. After waiting for around 10 minutes the taps should be working as normal and your new crushed granite sinks will be ready to use.
