Gabbric Anorthosite or more commonly known as Black Galaxy Granite is a stone material that is quarried and often sold as black granite and used on some of the world’s most prestigious projects, both commercial and domestic. It was introduced somewhere around the 60‘s and 70‘s, and is originally imported from Ongole which is located in India. At present, there are several other countries that are quarrying the stone, such as Canada, Iran, Spain and Brazil to name a few.
Since the Black Galaxy Granite is a natural stone, it will vary in its appearance as well as its physical attributes. In recent years the mining process has not produced as much of the granite as it use to which has drastically increased the price, since the demand is still relatively high.

Some people mistakenly thought that the veining in the stone caused the material to be weaker, but this could not be further from the truth. This in no way affects the stones integrity, but due to this misconception the price of such stones are slightly less than its counterpart. You can often tell where a stone was found in a quarry by the size pits it contains. Generally, stones with an excessive amount of pitting are found at approximately 30-60 feet below ground level. Those stones with less pitting are normally found at approximately 164-230 feet above ground level.
Many consumers have complained after having Black Galaxy Granite installed in their home, especially kitchen counter tops. After getting to know their stone they have found circular and/or half moon shaped scratches on the surface. These scratches have left many consumers baffled, and they have spent additional money on attempting to have their surfaces repaired to no avail. These scratches are not caused by you nor are they defaults in the stone, they are the result of the polishing process at the processors. The scratches are actually wheel marks and they are not normally seen on lighter granite, but are relatively obvious on black granite.
Another buyer beware tip that you should watch out for is if a supplier attempts to tell you that the slab has an enhancer. High quality Black Galaxy is never doctored. Even if they did put some sort of enhancer on the slab, it would wear off. This is definitely a fraudulent act and should be avoided at all cost.
Well there you have it those are the undisputed facts regarding Black Galaxy granite and I hope that you have found them to be useful.
